Jingles’ Bunny

After our move, having Jingles indoors became an annoyance. She was still semi-feral so she yowled incessantly for her freedom. The wildlife inhabiting the canyons eagerly preyed on small animals left out at night. We were afraid she would be an easy target.

After months of sleepless nights, Bernard said, “It’s time for us to let her out. We can’t go on like this.” He didn’t want to do it, but couldn’t take the yowling anymore.

Jingles found her own way out and didn’t return for several days. We worried about her, but one day we heard meowing near a new home site. Her cry was unmistakable. After that, we let her come and go as she pleased. We hoped she could find safety and shelter on her own. It became obvious she preferred hunting for her own food.

Daddy finally let Jingles out. She made so much noise that Mama said he got fed up. I didn’t see what he fed up on. I looked but couldn’t find anything new to eat. Mama said there’s too much wildlife for Jingles, but it was time to let her go. She made it home okay so I guess it wasn’t as wild as they thought.

She was gone four days. Mama said. They thought Coyotes ate her. They made lots of noise at night. They had a lot of parties. Jingles came back with rat breath. I guess they shared their rats with her. Coyotes didn’t eat as good as us.

My stupid sister brought home a bunny one morning. I hoped it wasn’t Easter’s bunny. She’d be sad. It looked like a big, long rat. Maybe our neighbor Coyotes gave it to her. Daddy saw it in the yard. He told Mama only the ears and paws were left. Daddy picked up the stuffing with the yard spoon, but left the rest to lie around like my toys. My stupid sister and Daddy could play with them later.

When we went back out to look for Jingles’ toys, they were gone. Daddy said she ate it. My stupid sister didn’t share. That’s okay. She eats pretty bad. She didn’t hang around with us even when she had gourmet food. I told you she’s stupid.

TIPS:

Be aware of the wildlife in your area. Small domestic animals are easy targets for coyotes and birds of prey. Check with your vet to see what precautions you need to take to keep your pet safe.

Snake bites can be lethal to dogs. Small rodents attract snakes. There are vaccines you can give your dog that can delay the effects of a snake bite. Talk to your vet about this.

Snake aversion training is also available, but it’s not for every dog. Assess the practicality of this experience for your dog before you subject him to this training.
